CORROSION DETECTION IN SHIPS - DARTMOUTH NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA
Parléview produced and delivered the Innovation for Defence, Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program’s Corrosion Detection in Ships” event, hosted at the Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE) in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The month-long Sandbox brought together innovators from Canada and the United States to test prototype solutions designed to detect hidden corrosion on Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) vessels—supporting efforts to reduce maintenance time, extend vessel life, and lower long-term costs.
From April to May, Parléview coordinated the phased arrival and testing schedules of 9 innovation teams, each provided with a dedicated 3 to 5 day testing window. The event was structured to allow teams to refine and calibrate their technologies while receiving direct feedback from defence subject matter experts in a controlled, operationally realistic environment. Parléview oversaw the planning and execution of a series of custom-built test stations designed to replicate real-world naval conditions, including corrosion hidden within pipes, behind walls, and in submerged underwater scenarios. These environments enabled rigorous evaluation of emerging technologies such as drones, magnetic scanners, and other sensing devices under conditions reflective of active naval vessels.
The HMCS Goose Bay, docked at the COVE facility, served as a live operational platform, introducing additional complexity such as confined spaces and existing onboard equipment. Parléview managed site logistics, access control, safety protocols, and daily operations to ensure testing could proceed safely and efficiently around an active vessel. Participants consistently noted the realism of the testing environments and the high level of coordination and support throughout the event.
By enabling side-by-side evaluation of innovative approaches, the innovation testing supported the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces in assessing solutions that could significantly transform ship maintenance practices. Parléview was responsible for the budget and subcontractor financial management, planning, staffing, procurement, and management of all event logistics, including outdoor infrastructure deployment.
